A Moment In Time by Marina Syntelis

50 x 60 cm
Oil on Cotton Canvas

A few thoughts from the artist.

My attempt was to paint a surrealistic seascape, where the waves and the clouds mix, where the sky and the seashore become confused and confusing. In the process, more confusing ideas came up.

The direction was unclear: what is moving upwards or downwards, a dark hole digging into the canvas and clouds escaping the surface. Only the winds could have the power to cause the paradox. Anemoi is the Greek word for winds and is the word used in mythology to describe the four Gods of the winds.

I began to imagine each of these four winds as characters in my painting, each with their own distinct presence. Boreas, the cold north wind, was depicted as a swirling vortex of dark clouds and icy mist. Notus, the hot south wind, appeared as a fiery whirlwind that seemed to consume everything in its path.

Eurus, the east wind, was portrayed as a gentle breeze that carried whispers of secrets and mysteries from distant lands. And finally, Zephyrus, the west wind, was shown as a playful gust that danced across the canvas with a joyful mood.
